Shanon - FOCI
Friends of Cortes gives the community of Cortes a big THANK YOU for submitting so many reports of Common Nighthawks this summer!

Every summer season, flocks of these fantastic birds return to the island, nest, brood and teach their young to fly and forage for insects. By the end of August, they began their long journey back down south to their winter sites in South America!

It seems the best place to catch these birds in action is at Smelt Bay around sunset! If you didn't catch them this summer, pay a visit to Smelt Bay next year and let us know what you saw!

Check out the photo above to see where Common Nighthawks were spotted around the island. You can read more about this Species at Risk here:

And, remember, FOCI needs support from people like you! A yearly membership costs only $20 per person/$25 per family, and comes with some great perks!
You can also donate to help our vital work in responding to the ecological crisis and climate emergency here on Cortes. Check out our website for more details :)
