WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER DRIVERS

A message from Carina:

Our volunteer drivers are driving seniors to appointments on and off Cortes Island. There are a few but not many volunteers who are willing to take the time to drive someone off island.

To spread the “workload” we are looking for more volunteers who would want to drive seniors to and/or from town, mostly to the hospital in Campbell River. Your ferry costs and gas will be paid for.

Sometimes, but not always, the client and you would get priority loading. You might have time to tend to some of your own errands. You would always have the choice to say “yes” or “no” when I (Carina) call to ask if you can do it on a particular day.

It might happen just once a year or a few times, depending on how many volunteers we have, and how many requests.

We – the seniors who need these rides and I (Carina) – would be most grateful if you can volunteer for this service.

Feel free to contact me, Carina6793, for more information or for signing up.

ARE YOU FIRESMART?

At our last CISS AGM, the FireSmart program was presented by Kate McLean from Quadra Island. She spoke very knowledgeably and clearly about the program designed to assess residential properties and she made recommendations for eliminating or improving conditions to make properties more resistant to fire in case there were to be a forest fire situation.

Kate McLean was involved in the development of the program and knows it inside out, allowing her to answer all questions from the audience.

The Seniors Society made arrangements to have Kate do an assessment of the Seniors Village and she presented a thorough report with a number of suggestions for improvement. CISS was most impressed with her presentation and report and is currently moving toward enacting those suggestions.

In May and June, individual property owners on Cortes were also offered a free fire assessment by the FireSmart program. If you missed that opportunity, visit https://firesmartbc.ca/, the FireSmart website. It offers lots of advice regarding how to be fire smart in B.C.
