What is more universal on Cortes than our connection to place? This is why, for several months, islanders have been gathering to strategize how to respond to Mosaic's (I.T.’s) recent logging
plans for Cortes Island. Part of our response is a Celebration of our Relationship with our Forests on Wednesday, April 20th, 7 pm at Mansons Hall. Please see the attached poster.
Mosaic/Island Timberlands say they have very little institutional memory of their previous work in, or relationship with, this community. Mosaic representatives will attend this evening, and we will share with them, and remind ourselves, of our multi-generational commitment to the wellbeing of our forests. The evening will include presentations about community forestry history and activism, ecological biodiversity, community mapping, impacts of climate change, and options for the future.
We are doing everything we can to make this an inclusive, safe event. We will be indoors at Mansons Hall with the windows and doors open, so dress warmly! We respectfully ask that, if you are able, you wear a mask, but no one will ask you to put one on. No vaccine passports will be checked. And for those still not able to join us, or off island,
the event will be livestreamed. Join us virtually at the zzom link listed at the top of this article.
Kids are welcome to participate, and free childcare will also be available in the playschool room with Seren.
In May, Mosaic will host a meeting on Cortes. This will be the time to ask questions about the scope, locations and details of their logging plans. The gathering now, April 20th, is to recommit to our love of this place.
