There have been several very thoughtful articles recently regarding Mosaic Forest Management's upcoming operations on Cortes. Questions and discussions of harvest levels, management objectives, and other issues relating to on the ground forestry were raised. These are critical topics for public discourse. It is also important for a public understanding of who this forest management company is.

Mosaic is a cooperative venture between Island Timberlands and Timber West. It is Island Timberlands that holds land on Cortes. These companies are much the same as other extractive, industrial, capitalist corporations. Some liquidate forests, some extract fossil fuels, some mine for other profitable materials. These are the companies that are degrading and despoiling our earth and our future.

We don’t owe them cooperation or consent.

If Island Timberlands does want to have a public dialogue about their plans for Cortes and their sustainable forestry practices I think a good place to start would be a discussion of their 2014 logging on McLaughlan Ridge in the watershed of the Port Alberni drinking water system. There they clear cut hundreds of hectares of Cathedral Grove like old growth forest. That gives us some idea of their conception of sustainable forestry.
