The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) sponsors local Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer programs as part of our regional approach to providing humanitarian aid throughout our area.
We are recruiting volunteers for the Emergency Support Services (ESS), Emergency Communications Team (ECT), and Canadian Animal Disaster Response Team (CDART) programs.
The first principle of the BC Emergency Management System is to Ensure the Health and Safety of All Responders and Volunteers, so all our programs have been adapted to respect the requirements of Covid-19. Learn more about our programs and how you can be a Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer by attending our virtual information sessions.
Emergency Support Services (ESS)
Have you wondered how a family receives help when they are displaced by a disaster? Emergency Support Services is the “heart of emergency response” by helping evacuees find shelter, meals and clothing through vouchers as well as supporting the reunification of family members. For those who are interested in “behind the scenes” initiatives there are positions needed to help ensure resources are ready and plans are prepared.

ECT volunteers serve as “Plan B” when primary communication systems are disrupted or destroyed. This group is composed of certified Amateur Radio Operators (and those willing to obtain their certification) who volunteer their time and expertise. The SRD provides most of the equipment required to operate this service through a library of equipment that members can sign out to develop their skillset.

We recognize that failure to evacuate and care for pets during an emergency has negative implications for the emotional and physical well-being of both the owner and the animal.
During disasters CDART offers assistance by providing services such as:
•Set up of temporary animal relief shelters;
•Intake - animal registration at relief shelters;
•Transportation of animals;
•Care and maintenance of animals at the relief shelter; and
•Reuniting animals with owners/guardians.
