Dropping In - Fibre to Home Construction Begins on Cortes Island
The first of the fibre-to-the-home deployments from the Connected Coast is starting now on Cortes Island, B.C.
This week, construction crews are starting to build the underground-drop network, the infrastructure that will one day connect all residents of Cortes Island to a resilient and reliable telecommunications network.
The $4.3 million last-mile project is financed in part by the provincial government and operated by CityWest. Depending on weather and other factors, the construction phase of the project should be finished by the springtime.
“We’re excited to be bringing both great fibre-to-the-home services, as well as being a partner in the Connected Coast project,” said Stefan Woloszyn, CEO of CityWest. “A lot of people in our organization, as well as on Cortes Island, worked hard to make this happen, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve.”
CityWest has indeed received a lot of local help to make this project happen. In addition to the crew, local subcontractors have been hired: 50 per cent of the labour crew is made up of Cortes Island residents.
Once construction is complete, the drop infrastructure will be tied into the Connected Coast network, a joint partnership operated by CityWest and Strathcona Regional District, and financed by the federal and provincial governments. The Connected Coast will provide backbone communication services to Cortes Island, as well as 138 other rural and remote communities, including 48 Indigenous communities – representing 44 First Nations – along the BC Coast from Prince Rupert, to Haida Gwaii, south to Vancouver, and around Vancouver Island.
The ‘Dropping In’ fibre-to-the-home installations will begin on the Klahoose First Nation, followed by the Seaford neighbourhood, then Mansons Landing and Whaletown.
