After lights flickered repeatedly last night and the voltage in my 120 plugs read 98 this morning, I called Hydro and got an immediate call back from a repair technician who said Cortes Island is trying to draw more power than the infrastructure on Cortes can handle. He was well aware of the problem. Hydro had increased the current from the substation in Power River that supplies the island but reached a point where their equipment and wires here would burn out or catch fire. He said warmer weather will help. Their design department is looking at what needs to be changed, but meanwhile their advice is to unplug sensitive equipment that is not surge protected and to reduce use wherever you can. Collectively we can help raise the voltage and keep the power on. He recommended turning off lights we aren't using & lowering heating thermostats a few degrees.
