Becky and Scott Knutson
Scott and I have finally decided it is time to retire! The coffee roasting business has been a great adventure for the last 13 years! We will be moving off Cortes to be closer to family so our home will also be for sale. It has not been listed yet, however, it will be soon. We know there has been some talk on the island about this, so we thought we’d let you know what is happening.

We would like to let our loyal customers and fellow Cortesians know how much we appreciate you and have been very grateful for your continued support, encouragement, and feedback through the years. Becca’s Beans has grown from doing about 600lbs in 2008 to well over 6000lbs/year with 99% sold on Cortes. We made a decision early on to keep it very local and pretty small because I was still working as a RN in Campbell River. When we got started we knew literally nothing about coffee roasting. Zero. Zilch. If we can do it, so could someone out there looking for a business adventure of their own. Many of you know of the serendipity that got us started. We have no plans to abandon our summer coffee commitments, have been going strong and will see the summer through, for sure! I just ordered more green coffee yesterday.

Our hope and preference is to sell our home and business to the same folks. You will be able to view the property details when it is listed soon. They have to be separate sales. It would really be a shame to move the roastery from the 14x24 building built expressly for it. Special slab under the roaster, 8in. diam. stainless double wall insulated high temp ducting, gas line plumbed by gasfitter, inside crane hoist for moving 60-70kg. coffee bags around, shelving and worktables, etc. Until we list the house, we will not know what the interest might be for the property and the business to be bought by the same people. If we have a number of people who are interested in the house but not the business, we will look for a separate buyer. It would be wonderful if a local could buy both! This isn't a rush sale. Scott and I are committed to finding the right fit for the business, so it can remain successful. We were thinking it best to get the info out there in case there was someone on Cortes that has a proper space or could create one to accommodate the business and was very excited about doing it. We VERY MUCH want to see it stay on the island so somebody else can carry on with freshly roasted coffee! If you have family or friends who would love to live on Cortes but wondered what they would do for income, let them know! This is a turnkey business for a very reasonable price. We also have 5.6 acres, a big greenhouse, orchard, 1100 sq. ft. studio/workshop. Lots of income potential here. Since we purposely kept the business pretty small, there is opportunity to expand.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, summertime is a great time to learn. Whomever buys the business will have access to training if roasting is new to them, access to Becca’s Beans blend recipes, all customer and vendor lists, etc. The sale will include all equipment (Diedrich IR7 roaster-orig. purchased new, ducting, custom built crane hoist, new unused extra motor, bags, sealer, bins and pails), and all green coffee in inventory at time of sale (could be anywhere between $3000-8000 depending on inventory). Any buyer will have everything needed to get started and last for a while. As we get ready to sell, we won’t be reducing any of our business. Work is in process all the time. We will be asking around $45K depending on the green coffee inventory at the time of sale. Serious inquiries only please. Much gratitude!
