A joint project-FTCCIS & FOCI
What a fantastic response to the Nest Box Kit Project, sponsored by the Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society (FTCCIS) and Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI)! We received 30+ pre-orders, and have started a waiting list. We are planning on making another 10 kits and are optimistic that we can accommodate the people on the waiting list.
Lucky violet-green & tree swallows and hairy woodpeckers!! The assembled nest boxes will be scattered around Cortes in appropriate habitat.
Bird trivia: How many eggs do violet-green & tree swallows incubate?
How old are hairy woodpecker young when they are able to leave the nest?
We live in a big-hearted community and we offer our appreciation for the generosity offered for this project. Wood for the first bunch of nest box kits was supplied by Henry and the Blue Jay Lake Sawmill, and Klahoose has offered wood for the additional kits. Fred made his workshop and tools & equipment available for cutting and preparing the kits; Fred also provided a wealth of design and woodworking experience. Autumn has been our stellar woodworker, refining features and developing an efficient assembly line, always keeping in mind what is best for our feathered friends. Thanks also to the advice given by some of our experienced birders – George Sirk, Christian Gronau and Peter Elliott. George will entertain parents and youth with swallow stories and nesting advice in a zoom session.
Nest Box kits will be picked up on Friday, March 12, outside the FOCI office, 12:00 – 2:00 pm by those families and individuals who have already pre-ordered. We will not take any more orders until we have filled all the existing requests.
