FOCI - Autumn
It is the month of March and represents the toughest time of the year for wildlife.

There has been evidence of wildlife, possibly a bear, having gone through garbage placed out for pickup, within the past few weeks in the Whaletown area.

Please put your garbage “curbside” Saturday morning, NOT Friday night.
Garbage is the #1 bear and wildlife attractant. You may not be aware, but it is illegal to leave garbage out overnight and is enforced by ticketing in BC.

Friends of Cortes Island’s Wildlife COEXistence team are working to provide islanders with the tools and skills to responsibly work towards wildlife COEXistence.

Food waste in garbage has been identified as a #1 concern and FOCI is working on positive solutions to reduce the necessity to place food waste in garbage.

Our first step in the right direction is for islanders to ensure garbage for pickup is responsibly placed out Saturday mornings only; this avoids Friday night raids by wildlife. Thank you.

We attach below our wolf & bear primers, which give islanders concise, practical direction in coexisting with bears & wolves on Cortes Island.

Especially at this lean time of the year, please also bring your attention to ensuring you have secure, predator-free enclosures by day and shelters by night for your livestock and pets.

Wildlife COEXistence is possible when we do our due diligence.

You are not alone in working through these challenges; please call on the FOCI COEX team at any time and we would be happy to arrange a site visit;

Thank you for working with us in being proactive and responsible around wildlife COEXistence.
