We can still participate in the launching of Candle Boats of Light this year BUT we need to do this in a Covid safety manner. There will NOT be a community gathering for Candle Boats of Light at Manson’s Lagoon Spit. INSTEAD, visualize the shoreline of Cortes Island alight and aglow from candle boats set adrift from many locations.
How lovely for each of our immediate family households or Covid bubbles to send off Candle Boats of Light from their closest, accessible beach and welcome back the returning light from the sun. There will not be the usual community Solstice celebration at Manson’s Hall, but the time can be set aside to celebrate the winter solstice from many shoreline locations around Cortes Island – December 21, 4:30-5:00 pm.
There is an ebbing tide all afternoon (not ideal), so the timing to launch people’s homemade boat creations should be by 4:45 pm as night falls which allows the last hour of the ebb tide to carry boats out before the tide turns.
Make sure that your boat or creation is earth-friendly: use wood, paper bags, tissue paper; you can replace the aluminum casing around tealights with shortened toilet paper rolls, and create a wind screen with various materials. Be simple or elaborate; tealights on a flat board work well, but check that your boat floats ahead of time. Gumboots and a long pole will assist you in pushing your boat out.
If stormy weather keeps boats in port, the date will be re-scheduled and announced on the Tideline.
Have fun creating, launching and sending out your merry wishes.
