Jan - FAC
The Ferry Advisory Committees (FAC) are set up by the BC Ferry Corporation to engage all of the coastal communities where they provide ferry services. There are a total of 13 committees including our own, the Campbell River-Quadra-Cortes Ferry Advisory Committee (CRQC FAC) and two meetings are held with BC Ferries staff in a normal year.

Our Committee has twelve members, six from each Island and two of those seats are held by the Regional Directors or their alternate. Each member is appointed for a four year term which can be extended by BC Ferries.

The FAC is there to provide a forum for representation and discussion of local ferry issues, and recommendations are then passed on to the Ferry Corporation for action.

We have not met face-to-face this year, but on Tuesday, October 20th we held a virtual meeting attended by most of the Committee and six representatives from BC Ferries. There were seven items on the agenda:
a. Cortes Postal truck
b. Loading for Cortes at Heriot Bay
c. Discussion of the ‘resident priority loading’ SSR (not supported)
d. Update on commercial vehicle travel on DG sailings
e. Noise complaint – metal plate vibration during unloading at Q’Cove
f. Update on Route 23 Island Class vessels
g. FAC membership – 2 Cortes Island vacancies

Items a. and b. will be taken care of as soon as possible by the Terminal Manager.
Item c. was a request from us to provide resident priority loading on selected sailings next summer from Quadra to Campbell River and return. BC Ferries cannot support that request as it would require extra terminal staff, which they cannot do at the present time.
Item d. is awaiting a decision from the Corporation for a go ahead.
Item e. will be attended to this week.
Item f. The new Island Class ferries to be assigned to Route 23 are still on track to be in service by 2022 as scheduled.
Item g. Due to two resignations by Cortes Island representatives, there are vacancies on the Committee, which we hope to fill in the next few weeks.

Our next full meeting of the Committee will be held next Spring, pandemic permitting, but, in the meantime, we can still deal directly with the Ferry Corporation on any issues that you may wish to bring forward to us. You can contact myself or any other Committee member listed on the new BC Ferry website.
