May 1: Early Birds 101: From Dawn Chorus to All-day Twitcher with Corry Dow in partnership with FOCI.

This is a fabulous time of year to hear the dawn chorus and begin to listen for bird calls as birds are establishing territories or trying to attract a mate. The result is an amazing orchestra of bird song, right on your doorstep every morning. It’s free and all you have to do is roll out of bed a little early, sit back and listen! It’s a wonderful way to start the day!

Listen to numerous other Cortes bird songs… and help solve at least one local mystery bird sound! Join us to hear Cortes birds and listen while Corry describes who to listen out for and how to tell your towhees from your flickers. We will also hear from Friends of Cortes Island about ways to stay engaged with nature on Cortes right now and from the Cortes Museum and Archives about the May 2nd Bird Count and how you can put your new skills to use!

May is dedicated to the theme “Nature is Good For You” and is offered in partnership with the Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI). Join us to learn more—together—on Friday’s Folk U Talk Show 1 to 3 p.m. on CKTZ 89.5 FM or listen to this series later on cortesradio.ca, cortescurrents.ca or on friendsofcortes.org.

Folk University brings neighbours together to share their interests, passions, and skills with each other. This happens over the virus-free airwaves of our local community radio station every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at CKTZ 89.5 FM or cortesradio.ca or listen to the podcast anytime at cortescurrents.ca/ YOU are encouraged to call-in every week to contribute, ask questions, or share your program ideas at 250-935-0200.
