On Sunday December 8th, a group of 50 or so gathered to hear Cortes writers read from “Home: A Cortes Community Anthology”.
At the beginning of 2019 the Housing Committee invited Cortes residents of all ages to write a few words, a page or a paragraph on home. That seed, planted and watered, has now blossomed into a true work of art featuring 17 writers and artists sharing some of what home means to them. Each contributor, with a unique history and at varying stages of life, created a diversity of imagery and ideas, painting a compelling and thought-provoking story.
Hearing the words of each writer spoken aloud in their own voice was deeply moving and inspiring.
Elizabeth Anderson shared, “I had the impression my soul had been mined by the authors' poignant poems and stories, so deeply was I affected at the recent book launch for "Home". I am honoured to rub elbows with the writers and chat about our children, gardens, favourite books, whatever comes up. I knew I was making the right choice when I committed to living on Cortes Island many years ago; a truly magical place where the natural beauty is multiplied over and over through contact with my friends.”
The topic of home resonates and reverberates at a core level of human need and longing, and I left on Sunday afternoon with a full and open heart, deeply grateful to know and be known by this community.
