The Cortes Island Emergency Support Services (ESS) Team is a volunteer based, community emergency response program that provides for the short-term needs of people who have been displaced from their home in the event of an emergency. This assistance includes food, lodging, clothing, emotional support and family reunification, which is funded by the Province of British Columbia.
A commitment of approximately 2-4 hours a month is asked for to contribute to tasks such as monthly meetings, training, exercises, documentation, and administration. More hours may be required during emergencies. There are non-mandatory monthly meetings from 7-8pm on the third Thursday of every month to provide volunteers with skills such as:
- Acting as a liaison between evacuees and first responders;
- Working with local businesses; and
- Providing temporary services to evacuees through government funding.
