The blackberry reflects so much about our community. We love this simple vine for its wild beauty and abundance. It is resilient, independent, and sometimes cantankerous! I hold a special place in my heart for a particular late summer feeling: standing in the ditch at dusk, filling a bucket to overflowing with bright, juicy blackberries and feeling so lucky to be here, now. Living a life intimately entwined with other living things be they animal or vegetable
is undeniably complicated. But it’s what we’ve opted into, here on Cortes: a small, interdependent community that, at its best, thrives together.
Some of you know that I’ve been making ice cream as Glass Moon for almost two years now. I get the honour of working with the bounty of the island’s farms and gardens, sharing my creations with friends and neighbours, and I am deeply grateful for that. That gratitude inspired me to approach Cortes Community Housing about collaborating on an end-of-summer fundraiser to benefit the Rainbow Ridge project.
I believe we need a diversity of ages, income levels and skill-sets in order to thrive as a community, and I think stable, affordable, year-round rental housing is a vital part of making that happen. In two short years Cortes residents have donated and loaned over $1.5 million towards purchasing the land and funding the project, as of this month they only need another $150,000 to make this dream a reality.
I hope you’ll join Cortes Community Housing and Glass Moon ice cream to celebrate creative energy and community interdependence at the Blackberry Bash Ice Cream Social. Manson’s Hall, noon to 4pm, on Sunday August 25th. All profits and raffle ticket sales will go directly into the fund for Rainbow Ridge.
There will be live music and a chance to learn more about the planned development at Rainbow Ridge. Interested folks are also encouraged to get on the waiting list for new rental housing by clicking the Registration Button on this link: https://www.cortescommunityhousing.org/for-whom/
I’ll be serving blackberry ice creams and sorbets, including Blackberry sherbet, Milk Chocolate Blackberry ice cream, Basil & Blackberry Jam ice cream and Blackberry Watermelon sorbet.
And we’re raffling off a custom ice cream flavour! The winner gets six pints of their dream flavour...whether it’s “just vanilla” or something way more whimsical. Tickets will be on sale at Friday Market, Saturday Parlour, and the Blackberry Bash. The draw will take place at the end of the Blackberry Bash. Tickets are $3 each or 5 for $12.
It takes a community to raise a village. Thanks for being part of mine! Hope to see you Sunday.
