Having just returned from the Cortes Community Radio annual Lip Sync fundraiser, I couldn’t wait to get my thoughts on paper. As one of the Lip Sync performers, I felt very welcome on Cortes and I don’t have to tell residents just what a really special place they have. We listen to Cortes Radio every day and feel that 89.5 is a community service worth its weight in gold.
Back to the Lip Sync. We were really impressed by the number of acts involving young people of all ages performing their routines on stage which were not only incredibly entertaining, but we marvelled at the creativity and courage of the performers. Well done young people!
The Lip Sync Master of Ceremonies Rick Bockner kept us entertained between acts with jokes about all aspects of Cortes society including issues like tourism, job
creation and how getting on the ferry from Cortes to Campbell River has become
well organized military operation. One of Rick’s solutions to address this problem was to create a combination security service and affordable housing option. This would involve renting out your vehicle while it sits unattended overnight in the Whaletown ferry lineup ... you can sleep soundly knowing your car is occupied by friendly folk. The ad could read thus ... overnight accommodation available ... amenities include but not limited to ... heated seats, partial ocean view, public washrooms, stereo, sleeps four ... bring your own pillows and DON’T run the battery down. Sliding scale. Check in time 6:15 pm ... check out 7:30 am. No exceptions.
Many locals told me how much they admire our community hall on Quadra Island. We are very fortunate to have a relatively new and very spacious hall which has been recently seismically upgraded. Like Mansons hall, our facility is the focal point of the community used by all ages for a wide range of activities seven days a week, 365 days a year. And yes it is supported by a taxpayer subsidy and it is worth every penny. We own five acres with a house on Quadra and the annual fee on our 2019 property tax assessment bill for the Quadra hall was $42.20 which is less than 5 per cent of our annual tax bill.
We look forward to attending more events on Cortes.
