July 31st, the Cortes Community Housing Committee partnered with Carol Newell and her team to pull off an outstanding fundraiser. A testament to the fact that team work makes the dream work!
“I attended (and played some music) at a heart-filled and successful fundraiser for an important local project -- creating a significant quantity of affordable housing for islanders being driven from the island by skyrocketing real estate prices and the summer rental market. An inspiring example of a community coming together to care for its own.” - Robert Gass
With the generosity of many, spectacular volunteers and amazing team work, we raised an incredible $128,000 that evening. That inspiring number was in addition to the $5,000 raised the month prior, and a land donation in Whaletown that will give us the opportunity to create much needed rentals in both the north and south ends of our beautiful island home.
Another participant shared:
“Communities working together to solve their problems is beautiful. Long after we are all gone people will be living on Rainbow Ridge and caring for our precious island.”
We only have $150,000 left to reach our fund-raising goal for this project. Donations can be made on-line via: http://www.cortescommunityhousing.org/donate/
This community can do this, because so far it is the community of residents who have done it all. NO banks have been involved. We all know:
It takes a community to raise a village
Thanks to everyone who attended, to those who volunteered, and those who donated so generously. Due to the limited size of our venue, it was an invitation-only event. However, we are planning a fun family event to wrap up the summer with a bang. Please join us on August 25th to celebrate the abundance, tenacity and wild beauty of the humble blackberry—and of our island home—at the Blackberry Bash Ice Cream Social, see you at Manson’s Hall from 12-4pm that day!
