The other day dear friends had a party to mark their 40th wedding anniversary. It coincided with each of their respective 65th birthdays. They rolled these separate but special marvels into one big celebration at Manson’s Hall with lots of out of town family and friends mingling amiably with resident friends. One of those special evenings where Cortes shines in it diversity.
Delicious locally catered food, wonderful music by local musicians, and a grand twist of an unusual nature. They decided to spread the joy and host a silent auction to benefit a local charity; one that is capturing island support because it so reflects island need, the CortesCommunityHousing project.
So many of us were lucky to have arrived on Cortes before prices soared. Many others were lucky enough to have secured year round rentals before many were repurposed as short term vacation rentals. So many of us are lucky to call Cortes home, whether we are seasonal or full time residents. However, many long term residents did not have that good fortune and were forced to move away due to lack of housing.
That evening as we learned about the project, bidding in the silent auction took on a different meaning knowing that it would benefit more than just ourselves. Close to $2,000 was raised that night, as well as our spirits. There are so many creative ways to support this project, as our friends exemplified with so much fun and grace. Thank you.
This is a community initiative fuelled by island need and powered by local support because as we know:
It takes a community to raise a village.
Thank you all,
from your CortesCommunityHousing team
