It truly warmed my heart to see so many smiling faces down at Smelt Bay last Saturday celebrating Cortes Day! The cheerful and upbeat energy that persisted for the entirety of the event was a strong reminder of why year after year, so many gracious people pour their energy and time and determination into making this event happen. Everything about the day is a celebration of community, unity, and island culture, and I am so glad to have been the volunteer coordination for such a wholesome event.
Now, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to every single person who helped make this day a success.
Thank you to Aaron, Arpad, Paul, Matt, Leaf, Bill, Mary Clare, Steve, Tom, Forrest, and Laurier (our youngest volunteer yet!) for powering through the setup and/or teardown; to Andy and Hannu for orchestrating the music and sound for the day; to Jeramie for leading the beautiful parade; to Kint for opening the event with a love song; to Laurel, Catriona, Sean, Pawl, Claudia, Andy, Aaron, Leonard, and Michael for performing their music for us; to Lovena and Ryan for holding games on the field; to Helene for carefully handcrafting the games ribbons from recycled fabric; to Joe, Toni, and friends for expertly handling the traffic control; to Carole and Rebecca for bringing and minding the wonderful bouncy castle; to Chris and Nancy for being our enthusiastic Nail Sail Bail captains; to Jenny, Savannah, and Finnleigh for championing the Chicken Poop contest; to Tzeporah for spreading cheer by organizing the Cake Walk; to Mia, Chloe, Esiana (Cortes Co-op), Shantima, Andrew, Gloria, Hollyhock, and Good Libations for baking or sponsoring cakes; to Mary, Mark, Heidi, Margot, Christina, Cali, Gail, and Phil for making chilli and/or running the chilli stand; to Dayna, Dianne, Diana, Melissa, Christina, Charlene, Toni, Sandy, Alison, Donna, and Mary for donating fruit, making pies, and/or running the pie stand; to Joy, Mark, Steve, and Paul for lending gear and helping solve technical problems on the fly; to Laara for doing kid’s face painting; to Zhia for being my helpful right hand for the full day; to Mark, Claudia, and Mary for handling so much of the behind-the-scenes paperwork and organization; to Annie for making a beautiful Cortes Day t-shirt for the 20th year in a row; and of course Wendy for being an absolute queen and managing all the garbage and recycling created on the day. If I forgot any names, I apologize, please know that it is only a reflection of my poor note taking, and I truly appreciate your contribution!
Additionally, I’d like to thank Quadra Builders, the Cortes Coop, the Gorge Marina, Lane 8 Delivery, Marnie’s Books, and Hollyhock for sponsoring the Nail Sail Bail this year.
And last but not least, I’d like to thank everyone who showed up, participated, and had fun! You are the reason why we do this, and I hope that the island-wide momentum behind this event continues for many years to come.
Thanks also to Jo

I was unable to attend this year due to my dog creedling my leg (an accident he tells me), but my husband and two friends went and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to everyone that cared enough to put out all the effort to create such a fun event. Reading your "Thank you", Alma, reminds me of all the good reasons I love Cortes Island and it's caring community. Especially, thank you to you, Alma, for picking up the torch and bringing light to this event.
WAY TO GO ALMA!!!
