Cristi May Sacht was raised by the land, river, and ocean of the Salmon River in Sayward, BC — the traditional territory of the K'omoks First Nation — and fell in love with the natural world early. She carries that connection forward through her mixed heritage, rooted in German pioneer, Lillooet Nation, and English ancestry. Today, she lives with her family on their floathouse on Cortes Island, where she creates on the water as a grateful guest on the territory of the Klahoose, Tla'amin, and Homalco Nations.
Her art is an extension of that relationship with the sea. A specialist in Prussian blue cyanotype — one of photography's oldest techniques, dating to 1842 and the origin of the word "blueprint" — Cristi makes her prints directly on the ocean under open sky, using sunlight to fix images of seaweed onto fabric and paper. Her driving mission is the restoration of kelp forests, sea gardens, and the kelp highway to the abundance she knew as a child, work she pursues through Syren Ocean Solutions. Partial proceeds from every piece she sells go directly toward that revitalization.
