Alma here again. Today I am putting a call out for volunteers and donors for this year’s Cortes Day Cake Walk. This is a Cortes Day tradition in which participants buy tickets to participate in a musical-chairs-style game for the chance to win a locally made cake. There are as many rounds as there are cakes donated.
This year, the Cake Walk will be held in loving memory of Paola Filippin, a dear former community member and Playschool teacher. Paola passed in December 2017, leaving a legacy in the hearts and minds of many of us on the island, especially those of us who were lucky enough to have her as a Playschool instructor.
All funds raised from the Cake Walk event will go towards the Playschool Garden at Mansons Hall, a project which has been supported by Paola’s memorial fund. We would love to see this garden continue to grow and expand as a resource and feature of the Playschool.
In order to make this year’s Cake Walk a successful one, I am looking for cake donations from kind-hearted individuals and local businesses. I am also in need of a couple volunteers to help run this event on Cortes Day. All materials needed will be provided, and I will support the running of the event as needed.
Please contact me by email at mansonshallgmail.com or by phone at 250-935-0235 if you are able to donate baked goods or volunteer time for this event.
I look forward to seeing you all at Smelt Bay on July 20th!
