The Cortes Wild! Partnership invites you to join us… on the wild side, to celebrate our first year of natural history programming, Earth Day 2018 through Earth Day 2019.
We will have an exciting new slate of 2019 natural history exhibits on the walls for YOU…and we’ve doubled in size; come check out our new space!
The seabirds have discovered the new location of Wild Cortes and are flocking to the exhibit; mew gull, rhinoceros auklet and even kittiwakes! Curator Laurel Bohart will be up to her professional taxidermy magic. Join Laurel for an interactive session on study skin preparation and learn of the importance of study skins to Wild Cortes and natural history museums around the world!
Sabina and Dennis Mense will welcome you to the world of the subtidal… beneath the surface waters of Cortes Island! Dennis’ underwater photographs form the core of the new…Subtidal Biodiversity exhibit and they will be talking about diving adventures, demonstrating gear, giving snorkeling lessons (in the lab!) and giving away wetsuits to encourage all ages of new explorers to the underwater world!
Members of the Forest Tribe will be inviting you into the 24 hour world of BioBlitz! with our new… Get Ready to BioBlitz! exhibit. Follow tribe members on their forays into the Children’s Forest and learn about circinate vernation and the wood wide web!
Our new… There ARE Whales in Whaletown exhibit celebrates the humpback comeback; 86 individual humpback whales have been recently identified in local waters.
Learn how YOU can become a citizen scientist and collect the photo ID’s to support the MERS research. You can even learn how/ when Whaletown got its name.
…MOST EXCITING OF ALL, will be the grand opening of our new interactive ecology laboratory; the ECOLAB!!! Two fabulous stereomicroscopes will transport you into the world of … the microcosm! Discovery Boxes have been developed as independent study packages for all ages and the laboratory will provide a long-awaited community lab facility for stewardship organization’s local research work.
Mark the day; join in the celebration!
This is community celebrating… the wild side of Cortes Island!
