The Cortes Island Emergency Support Services (ESS) Team is a volunteer-based, community emergency response program that provides for the short-term needs of people who have been displaced from their home or rental property in the event of a disaster or emergency. This assistance includes food, lodging, clothing, emotional support and family reunification which is funded by the Province of British Columbia

A commitment of approximately 2 - 4 hours per month is required for meetings, free training and exercises. More hours may be required during emergencies or disasters. There are monthly meetings and training sessions for all volunteers so they have the skills to:
Act as a liaison between the evacuees and the first responders;
Provide temporary services to evacuees and a safe place where they can gather to receive assistance and information; and
Provide emergency preparedness education to the island.
