FOCI - Helen
In February and March, 2019, a contractor working with BC Parks will be undertaking work to upgrade the facilities near the day use area at Smelt Bay.
This is part of ongoing work aimed at improving the visitor experience in Smelt Bay, while protecting and conserving some of the natural and cultural values that make this site unique, such as an extensive shell midden site used by First Nations.
Garbage cans were upgraded to "animal proof" bins in the fall of 2018. Additional work to be done includes:
-Removing and replacing wooden posts and chains with rocks to prevent vehicles from damaging the midden
-Removing rotten logs and concrete/re-bar barriers in the overflow parking lot to make the parking lot cleaner and safer
The park will still be open to the public while this takes place, but people should take care to avoid interfering with work sites or machinery.
