Many representatives of our community spent Saturday and Sunday June 2 & 3 intensely collaborating with RWA Architects in the first round of workshops. Our goal was to create both a master plan and a site plan for the new community housing lands.
It began Friday evening June 1 with a presentation open to all the community, on the scope of the project led by Sandra Wood ,the CISS Housing Project Coordinator. Ian Scott, our Development Consultant, gave us a broad overview as to what we have ahead of us in terms of our BC Housing application for grants to build the new houses and how best to prepare.
The RWA architects, Cindy Brenneis and Jim Heinmiller, spoke in turn how we would work together over the weekend, while imagining the project from various perspectives such as:
- How we live and our values.
- Green issues in relation to this particular property.
- How we might consider the master plan for the entire property.
At the beginning of our work sessions, it was acknowledged that we might have some preconceived ideas or ‘hobby horses’ that should be parked at the door. Opening us to new ideas and enabling us to move the project along without the encumbrance of a special personal agenda.
We divided into three facilitated groups, where we talked and shared ideas, made lists and drew until the close of the first productive and fluid day.
As is usually the case in dynamic creative process, fluid is followed by ripples and the next day we organized into two teams. It became lively as we weighed differing values: privacy versus environmental impact, desirable versus affordable, housing needs versus population density and water issues. It was a day of dialogue that rubbed edges, but reaffirmed our mutual commitment to this project and its relevancy for our community.
The architects headed back to Vancouver with every scrap of drawing and lists of ideas, to assist them in crafting the conceptual master plan for the entire property and a site plan for housing.
Next month there will be another round and another opportunity for your input or participation. Please join in and add your voice! We will post more details as they become available.
