CKTZ and the Campbell River emergency Communications Team (ECT) led by Shaun Koopman signed an MOU to formalize the role of CKTZ in disaster communications. A VHF Kantronics 3 Plus packet radio communications system was installed at the station allowing the SRD to communicate by digital data exchange which is both highly accurate and reliable. This positions CKTZ to provide official information regarding any ongoing emergency. To make this possible however, especially during a multi-day event, we are going to need several volunteers who have or who are willing to obtain their amateur radio basic certification. This certification is required in order to communicate with the SRD using packet radio. The CKTZ is seeking volunteers. We will provide training. And, in the fall, a ham radio course will be given on the island. Contact Barry and/or Amanda Glickman if you are interested. 250-935-0220.
