The Cortes Island Museum would like to thank Rex Weyler for the inspiring presentation he delivered on January 28, 2018, at Manson’s Hall. The audience was very moved to learn about the environmental disaster in Equador, the plight of the affected indigenous people, and the progress of their fight for compensation. Thanks to generous donations at the door and Rex’s donation of his honorarium, CIMAS was able to send a contribution to Frente de Defensa de la Amazonia (FDA), the coalition of 80 Amazon communities impacted by Chevron’s pollution. FDA is the legal beneficiary of the Ecuador judgment, responsible for the trust account for a remediation, once they are paid. Remediation is expected to take 10 to 20 years due to the severity of the damage.
