Sandcastle Day brings children, youth, adults & families to Smelt Bay to create sculptures in the sand.
This year in spite of the sky overcast with smoke haze at the Bay, the sand became filled with entrants busily digging & shaping sand into their piece of art. There was a wonderful response to the call and an increase in children and youth participation. It was a spread of art created by all ages either solo, as a family or a team.
Sandcastle Day is the last in a series of island-wide yearly events, sponsored by the Cortes Island Seniors Society and requiring a host of volunteers.
Registering the entrants were Toni Smorodin and Marie Paquet. Set up & poster advertising was handled by Joe Grassi. The Seniors Society hot dog stand was organized by Ray Marttila and Jim Hentschel with helpers Dave, Walter, Phil, Peter, Wilson, Ray G & Jurek. The Rod and Gun Club, Rick & Jan Boas arrived early and with helpers Karen & Rod, Carol & Jo had coffee up & ready for the early bird workers.
Their Ice Cream stand provided a luxurious addition to pie or squares at the Linnea Farm pie table with Kirsten and The Cat Rescue desserts table with Samantha and Heidi. Thanks to Kirsten and Samantha for stepping in and taking over from the Whaletown Community and Mae Sherwood who for many years was the driving force organizing the popular pie table. The CIBATA mobile presence added promotional info for the tourists.
Thanks to Gail Ringwood for bringing the registration tent and Gail & Dianne for making it and the area distinctive with colourful hangings . Thanks to Richard Trueman for photographing the sand sculptures and CKTZ Cortes Radio for announcing the day.
Lynn Marttila assembled the judges who make it possible to award 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in each of the 6 categories with small cash prizes. They were Christina & Paul, Penny & Claude, Diana & Ed, Helen & Brittany, Lovena & Jason, Carole & Cara. Thank you for a job well done! Thanks go out to any I have missed that participated in any way to the success of the day!
Lynn & Ray, Toni & Joe called the organizational meeting and found all the volunteers to man the event!
