CCHA Family Support - Desta
Five weeks after his terrible injury, ten-year old Broderick and his family are now home from Vancouver Children's Hospital and the burn clinic. His surgery last Monday went well and while there will be no swimming or basking in the sun, he will be home on Cortes for the summer. Broderick is on the road to recovery, with follow-up appointments in Vancouver still to come.

Broderick's mother, Misty told me, "I have to say that over the years I had lost faith in humanity BUT through this struggle we are left overwhelmed with love from our fellow islanders. We thank everyone with all our hearts."

Thank you to all the kind hearts out there who have supported this family with healing wishes, offers of childcare and financial help. Further support would be gratefully accepted. A box for donations has been set up at Squirrel Cove Store and e-transfers can be sent to mistyt28gmail.com.

Thank you Cortes!

Help Support Broderick and His Family

At the end of May, ten year old Cortes Islander Broderick Burkhart-Thorne was air lifted to Vancouver Children's Hospital. Due to an accident with boiling water, he received 2nd degree burns over 16% of his body. He is in a lot of pain and will go into surgery on Monday, almost one month later.

Broderick, his parents and three younger siblings are currently staying in Vancouver while Broderick receives treatment at Children's Hospital. While they are there caring for Broderick, Misty and Curtis (employees at Squirrel Cove General Store) have been unable to work. They have depleted their savings building a home here on the island, on the land where Misty grew up. The family is exhausted by the emotional, physical and financial strain of this accident.

The Vancouver Island Children's Foundation has supported them with a $500 grant, which is a help, yet they need more. Please consider supporting this island family by:
-Making a donation to the family by e-transfer to mistyt28gmail.com
-Making a donation in person to the box set up at Squirrel Cove Store
-Offering some childcare at your home this summer so Misty and Curtis can work more hours.

Let's show this Cortes family that the Cortes community cares. They need us.

Please feel free to contact Misty or myself if you have any other ideas of how you can help.
