Mary Lavelle for SCCA
Cortes Day wouldn’t happen without the support and dedication of a huge group of volunteers. Our thanks go out to all the wonderful volunteers who showed up and made this day happen.
For many years now Lori Ann has organized the parade, and under her care it has got bigger and better and so much fun to watch!
Set up people showed up at 7 am and start loading tables, tents and gear down to Smelt Bay. Thank you to Fred S., Matt C., Andrew C. Jonah W., Mark C., Mary L. for their cheerful and excellent help. Eli M. and a small crew (I don’t know your names!) set up the tent, which was lent by Kristen and John S. Wendy came down to set up the garbage and recycling area. Hannu H. set up, ran, and tore down the music gear. Cortes Radio lent their generator. Andy V. organized a terrific line up of music. All the musicians volunteered their awesome talents.
The hamburger stand had lots of help, Jenny H. picked up stuff in town, Diane D., Joy S., and Mags J. prepped the veggies. Jim K., Ian R., Rebeka C. and Phil F. rocked the BBQs. Denise E. held down money collection, Myrna K., Lise B., Delia B. served. Mark A. picked up and hauled the BBQs that were lent to us by Ann D. and Jim K.
Dayna D. organized the pie table, calling volunteers and collecting all the bits and pieces necessary, even though she couldn’t be there on the actual day. Dianne H., Charlene G. and Diana S. got together and made 18 pies with fruit donated by Donna M. and Victoria S. Cathy W. picked up the ingredients for the crust in town. Mark A built a much needed new pie table. Thank you also to those of you who donated pies.
Gordon and Charlene G. and their granddaughters Jillian and Alison ran the chicken poop contest with flare once again.
Serge L. cleaned up the horseshoe pits and ran a great tournament.
Tear down and clean up crew are often the hardest to secure, and deserve heaps of praise. At the end of a long, hot and lovely day, Noba A., Pete S., Bob O., Andy V., Hannu H. Wendy, Mielle C. and Sylvain packed up, cleaned up and hauled everything back to the hall. Yay team!
Thanks for video footage by Om B., and the top photo by Richard T.
There were more than 50 volunteers, 29 vendors, countless parade people and musicians and La Mancha Dream Caravan dancers, as well as the RCMP, BC Ambulance, the Coast Guard, and Tim (BC Parks). Thanks everyone!
If I missed your name, please accept our thanks for your help, there were so many people!
