International Women's Day (March 8) was celebrated on Cortes Island with an entire day & evening of joyful festivities for women. There were approximately 60 women in attendance.
We started our special day with prayers, song, drumming & smudging from several of the beautiful Kalhoose First Nations women. The rest of the day was a delightful blend of story-telling, singing, dancing, good food, music & children's activities.
We are especially grateful to our local sponsors: Becca's Beans, The Gathering Place, Twincomm, Hollyhock, Cortes Market, Natural Foods Market, Squirrel Cove Store, Francis Guthrie & Dale Chandler.
Thank you also to our other generous sponsors from off-island: Prairie Naturals, HealthyWay, Pamela Vallee Accounting, TruValue, Quadra Builders & Heriot Bay Inn.
The Core Circle of women organizers did an incredible job of creating the program including free lunch & dinner & activities for children.
Thank you to these remarkable women: Corrin Adams, Laurel Bohart, Dale Chandler, Lella Gmeiner, Rose Hanson, Lynne Jordan, Jennifer Stevens, Carina Verhoeve & Meinsje Vlaming.
We are already starting to plan for 2017 and we know it will be even more wonderful!

It was deeply heartening to experience such a positive and celebratory gathering here on Cortes for International Women's Day. We've come a long way in a hundred years, since getting the vote! And we have a distance yet to go before we have true equality.
There is a movement afoot on the Island to create a monthly gathering of Women, to empower, educate, and celebrate! The first meeting is scheduled for May 4, at Suite 1 of the Fourplex on Gregg Rd. Stay tuned!
