Dear Jack Wills:
All Vancouver Island Regional Library customers have a right to privacy and confidentiality regarding the collection of personal information and the use they make of the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) facilities, collections and web sites.
The release of such information would contravene the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Rest assured VIRL did not sell your personal information to Ebsco and did not contravene the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. No personal information is transferred or has been transferred from VIRL to Ebsco.

When accessing the Ebsco databases there are two methods by which VIRL customers are authenticated; neither of which involves the transfer of private or personal information. When a customer wishes to access an Ebsco database via our eResearch
page (http://virl.bc.ca/elibrary/eresearch), they are taken to the Ebsco website where the customer is asked to enter their library card number. Ebsco takes this library card number sending an inquiry back to VIRL’s catalogue to authenticate that the number is valid. VIRL’s catalogue messages Ebsco that the number is valid and the customer is given access.

When a customer wishes to use the article search feature within the library catalogue (search.virl.bc.ca), they are required to login to VIRL’s website with their library card number. If the customer wishes to view an article that is available on Ebsco, a “handoff” occurs between the two websites. VIRL confirms that the customer has supplied a valid library card number, and hands the customer over to the Ebsco website, with no customer information being sent during the process.

The only personal information collected by Ebsco is supplied directly by the customer if they wish to create an account with Ebsco to save citation and documents. A customer is not required to create an Ebsco account to use the database, only if the customer wishes to save the search information on Ebsco’s website to access at a later date. I hope this clarifies the situation.

Regards,

Rosemary Bonanno
