Internationally acclaimed Portuguese/Canadian artist Awna Teixeira plays the Fireside Patio at the Gorge Harbour and Marina on August 9th.
Awna’s back porch gypsy style folk performances are truly unique as she showcases her multi-instrumental talents playing the banjo, accordion, guitar, ukulele, harmonica, kick drum, and tambourine.
Awna began her musical career in 2001 touring nationally with Canadian bands The Derby and The Red Eyed Rounders, and Barley Wik, winning numerous Vancouver Island Music Awards including, "Album of the Year," “Most Listenable CD,” and “Best Acoustic Act.”
In 2005, Awna Teixeira joined Allison Russell (of Birds of Chicago) in becoming a core member in the highly-esteemed and internationally recognized Canadian band, Po'Girl. While playing with Po' Girl, Awna has created 6 albums and toured in 15 different countries, on 4 different continents, averaging about 250 shows a year. Over the past three years, Awna released her first solo album 'Where The Darkness Goes' in 2012, 'Thunderbird EP' in 2013, and has released her second solo album 'Wild One' this March 2015.
Having received amazing fivestar reviews from all over the world, Awna has been called the next "undisputed Queen of Roots Music," by No Depression. With her fantastic songwriting ability and compelling stage presence, Awna has been likened to such legends as Emmylou Harris, Stevie Nicks, and Dolly Parton. Telegraph UK's listed 'Wild One' as top 13 best country albums of 2015, alongside Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.
