The giant old growth fir that dropped part of its top on Bartholomew Road Friday afternoon, taking out the hydro & phone lines, was cut down Saturday afternoon before power was restored in the evening. Sad as it was to see this monster fall, the rotten condition of the top was obvious when it hit Salmonberry Lane, producing a huge cloud of brown wood dust. This tree was topped by the wind back in the 1970s during a storm and the core of the top was hollow. It was only a matter of time and another big wind storm before the remaining huge limbs at the top would have come off. We were lucky on Friday afternoon that no one was walking or driving under the tree.
It took two hours of chainsawing before faller James Flawith of Precision Tree Services from Comox dropped the tree precisely where he wanted it to go. He described it as like trying to cut stone.
The stump awash in sap.
