During our travels throughout Europe this past summer we were overwhelmed with the history and unfortunately so much that involved conflict and war. We often commented on how lucky, yet isolated we are in Canada.
Without a doubt, one of the most emotional visits involved the beaches of Normandy. The commitment that Canadians had made to protect our way of living became overwhelmingly tangible when we visited the war memorials and military cemeteries in the Normandy area. The Ryes Cemetery at Bazenville certainly put everything in perspective. The rows of grave markers for the fallen Canadians that paid the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day was definitely a solemn experience, but one we would not have missed.
On November 11th, take a minute to think about these heroes.
