If you are like me, you are probably anxious to take practical steps to make sure that your septic system is performing well, but lack any practical knowledge about how to do it.

Here are a couple of brochures that I found extremely useful. They are produced by the Nanaimo Regional District.

I learned that one of the best thing we can do is to check the sludge level of the tank, and that summer is the best time of year to pump it out!

I also learned that although phosphates are no longer allowed in laundry detergent, all POWDERED laundry detergent should be avoided. There is a lot more.........

1. Septic Care and Maintenance

This gives 4 simple practical steps you can take right now.

2. Septic - How it works/fails

http://www.rdn.bc.ca/cms/wpattachments/wpID1866atID6036.pdf

This give an easy to understand explanation of how your system works, and how your behaviour impacts, damages or really helps the life of your septic system.
There are some great recipes for green cleaners.

I hope you find these as useful as I did. Go ahead - look under the hood and enjoy!
