RE: Whaletown Commons Land Purchase Negotiations, Status Report
The Strathcona Regional District has been in a lengthy behind closed doors process negotiating the purchase of the ~70 ac. property beside the Whaletown Firehall #2 on Whaletown Road. Relevant information is provided on the SRD website homepage. -Staff has had a meeting, with the WCSociety Board and the Society has offered support in principle for the sale at the valuations being discussed and has committed to providing approx. $60,000 in funding.
-The next step in the process would be to engage with the public. It is recommended that the purchase of a property as significant as Whaletown Commons should be discussed at the community level as a best practise prior to any further advancement of the negotiating process.
-Following discussions with the SRD, the Whaletown Commons Society Board passed a Resolution supporting in principle the recent SRD offer to purchase the property ...
(n.b. Valuation figures include a $200,000+ short term loan to be paid within five years by Cortes Island district landowners. It is my understanding that short term loans do not require a public assent process)
JUNE 17 at 7 p.m. at the Gorge Hall a public meeting on this matter will be held with SRD Russ Hotsenpiller and Cortes Regional Director Anderson.
