From Jim Abram to all ferry communities: This is the last opportunity that I have to reach out to you in our local media to encourage (badger) you into coming to the March 11th protest at the Legislature in Victoria. I will still be posting info on my Facebook page at (www.facebook.com/JimAbram)
, but this report has far greater reach on our islands.
The plans are firming up nicely. I have confirmed with all of the province-wide speakers that they will be able to make it and I will now have to go over the content of their presentations individually in the next few days. I completed the speakers line-up today and have distributed it to the other organizers, so it is the final line-up. I think I have hit on all of the categories and have gotten a stellar line-up of heavy hitters and everyday island folks.
The buses are still accepting passengers and for a minimum donation of $10.00 how could anyone refuse a comfy trip to Victoria with like-minded friends and neighbours. You will make it back for dinner time! We are the ones who are going to make a difference in this surreal situation and your attendance will be greatly appreciated by our entire coast. Keep in mind that there are people in the far reaches of the coast who cannot attend but would love to. Do it for them. Carry their spirit and strength to Victoria along with your sign and tell this government what we think of their plans and what we want them to do with it. Yes, I am pleading with you. Please GET ON THE BUS!!! Tickets will still be available until Monday.
If you really can't make it then think about throwing in a donation to the "Ferry Demonstration" account at the Credit Union. We do have expenses and our little group of volunteers have been really working hard on all aspects of this protest. If you were not there, you should have seen the work and enthusiasm and community spirit that was apparent at the Community Centre on Sunday at the sign making work bee. All of the materials and supplies and tools were donated and we had a great time. The creative energy and artwork came from the participants. We all need to keep up the energy and the caring for our island lifestyle.
We have a big job ahead of us. I can't stress that enough. There is no one to do that job except you and I. We need to make this the biggest media splash ever and embarrass this government into doing the right thing. They need to roll back our fares so that our population can continue to live here and travel where they need to and so that our businesses can function and stay here and create employment. They need to stop these stupid cuts that they are proposing, in any of the options they propose and just get on with running the ferry. They need to stop their draconian move to reduce the senior's discount by 50%. What an insult to the people that have built this province with their blood, sweat and tears. Disgusting! And last but not least they need to put BCFS back into the Ministry of Transportation and Highways. This is the ONLY sustainable solution. If they do not put us back where we came from, they will be back year after year with more fare increases, more cuts to service and less ridership thus perpetuating the continuing downward spiral that they have created. This issue is not going to go away. We need it fixed and we need it fixed now. So, come out and be part of the solution.
