As you may have heard already, there is what I consider to be a fantastic opportunity immediately available to the people of this island. The property on the south east corner of Sutil Point and Charlotte (just under 3 acres in size), where the Cortes Natural Food Co-op now sits, currently is available for purchase to that co-op at a price of $180,000. That offer is good through June of this year.
Now I am just one guy, and I am not speaking for anybody else. I know this land, and I am there almost every day. I, among others, grow food there, though not as part of the CNFC, just as hungry humans. We started a garden back in the “Days of Scot” while we were camping there and we just have never stopped planting.
For me, this is not about a food store and it is not about where you buy your food. It is about what this community can do in the long term on the rest of the property. It is both literally and figuratively about “the heart of the village”.
Yes, I may lose my garden, but I’ve seen that possibility coming for a while, and I already have started working in a new one this spring.
Anyway, I believe the efforts of the co-op’s members and friends this spring will be observed and discussed for a while. The goal of the campaign isn’t just to acquire the property… it is to do so debt free. Now there are communities that have accomplished things like this: eliminating the need for institutional lending, and I see it as a step in the right direction.
If you do too, please come tonight.
