Campbell River, B.C. – The Strathcona Regional District Board, at its December 12, 2013 meeting, unanimously passed a resolution supporting the Union of BC Municipalities and the Islands Trust Council as they seek the rejection by the Government of BC of any recommendations or proposals to increase ferry fares and reduce service levels.

The Regional Board is of the opinion that the proposals will have significant impacts on the economic health of not only the communities where the ferries dock but on the region as a whole. Furthermore, the Board believes that the ferry system should be managed as a part of the Province’s public infrastructure, as it is an extension of the public highway system and therefore an essential public service.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is a partnership of four electoral areas and five municipalities providing approximately 43,000 residents with 59 services including parks, liquid and solid waste systems, fire protection, emergency preparedness programs and a full-service sports facility.
