The Discovery Islands Ecosystem Mapping (DIEM) Project is a citizen science initiative providing information to enable inclusive planning processes that protect regional biodiversity and other community values. We have completed Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory (SEI) and online maps identifying and quantifying rare, fragile, and valuable ecosystems. DIEM is presently building a toolkit and offering workshops that engage residents of all the Discovery Islands in a collective effort to map local knowledge.

The Cortes Island Conservancy working group is formally partnered with DIEM and together, we are pleased to offer the following workshops, which take into account ferry travel times for Cortesians traveling to/from Quadra.
Questions: call Sabina 250 935 6467.
See you there!

I. Watershed Navigation/ Landscape Patterns
Prevent getting lost by staying found with wilderness expert Rob Wood: Maurelle Island’s down to earth mountaineer.

Learn to recognize and be aware of your position relative to basic repeating patterns in the landscape such as: streams and valleys (concave features) within a watershed converge downhill in an arterial pattern and ridges (convex features) converge up hill in a skeletal pattern to form heights of land or divides between watersheds. Includes a review of basic map & compass skills; classroom workshop and outdoor field session.

Sunday, October 20 11 - 4 pm
Workshop location: Discovery Islands Lodge, Surge Narrows Road
Questions: call Rob 250-287-6313

II. Moss Mania
Come out and learn to identify local moss species with the expert: Quadra Island’s Frank Boas, bryologist extraordinaire!

Hope Spring Trail offers a range of habitats for particular mosses which favour them; the ridge top features wet hollows where varieties of sphagnum moss grow - not often found on our relatively dry islands. After a leisurely couple of hours we'll descend and head indoors- to examine, label and package our finds and swap moss stories about the ones that got away!

Sunday, October 27 11 - 3 pm
Workshop location: meet at Hope Spring Trailhead, Quadra Island
