General News · 31st March 2013
I am so thrilled to let you know that the previously announced cuts to literacy coordination funds in 55 communities across BC (ours included) have been restored!
Literacy Outreach Coordinators and Literacy Task Groups from many places in BC united their voices in letters to the Minister of Education, Don McRae. He heard the importance of literacy in our communities, and has responded by finding the majority of the previously cut funding to be put back into literacy coordination efforts.
This means that Cortes Literacy Outreach will be receiving the funding on-par with last year, meant to go towards coordination funding for the organizing of literacy programming.
We also have some funding available from the Vancouver Sun's Raise-a-Reader Literacy Campaign, and we'll be using part of that money to go towards adult literacy here on Cortes. If you are or know an adult who would like free tutoring help in reading, writing, or math skills, please contact me at the number or email below, and I will arrange a local tutor for you.
Cortes Literacy Outreach will be the remaining Raise-a-Reader funding in other community offerings, so keep an eye here, an ear on the Radio, or log in to Facebook to become friends with Cortes Lit, so you can find out about what we've got coming up!
Thanks! Feel free to contact me with questions or comments:
