“Tachek”, the ferry in operation until December 15, 2012, when she was replaced with the "Tenaka", is currently undergoing substantial upgrades – to the tune of approx. $15 million.
For your information, here’s a breakdown of the improvements to “Tachek” until she is scheduled to return to serve the Cortes to Quadra run on 20 September 2013.
Here's the information that has been provided by Darin Guenette, Manager, Public Affairs, BC Ferries Corp., on what is being done for the $15 million "mid life" upgrade of the 43 year old Tachek. May she still float at age 86?:

* New state-of-the-art lifesaving appliances
* New heating and ventilation system
* Full upgrade of all accommodation areas including new washrooms
* New fire detection and protection system
* New wheelhouse structure
* New thermal and fire insulation
* New propellers and shaft lines
* New freshwater tank
* New gearboxes and generator sets
* New bow thruster unit
* New bulbous bow
* LED lighting
* New sewage system and holding tank
* New electrical cabling systems
* Complete blasting of hull and superstructure
* Removal of asbestos
