On behalf of our Nanaimo Chapter and regional co-hosts, Board members Chief Garry John and Pina Belperio, I invite you to join us in Nanaimo for our annual fall conference and business meeting October 26-28, 2012.
Titled, Making Waves: Sinking the Harper Agenda, the theme of our conference is confronting Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s austerity agenda, which disadvantages
the 99% while giving more power to corporations to profit from the destruction of our shared lands, water and air. Our keynote speakers will focus on issues of social justice and the environment, in particular the mining projects and pipelines that will have serious impacts in British Columbia.
Saturday’s events include two plenary panels and ten interactive workshops. The opening plenary will bring together activists who are making links between different issues and movements. The closing plenary will explore impacts of the austerity agenda both globally
and locally. Workshop topics include youth organizing for change, climate justice, the Canada Health Accord and how to lobby for public health care, national and international water issues within the framework of the commons and the right to water, impacts of
trade agreements, the threats of fracking and how to ban it in your community, and a skills-building session on civil disobedience.
We hope to see you there!
The Plenary Panelists for Saturday will be Robert Chernomas, John Hillary, Irene Lanzinger, Delores Broten
, Lorene Oikawa and Ananda Tan.
