Museum Expansion Underway
This winter is an exciting time for the Cortes Island Museum & Archives Society -- as we address our critical shortage of climate controlled storage space for the archival and artifact collections. A new dedicated office will free up the public archives room, and increased work and exhibit storage space will also be created. This major expansion is made possible through grants from Heritage Canada - Building Communities through Arts and Culture, Province of BC - Gaming Commission & BC Arts Council, Coastal Community Credit Union, Strathcona Regional District, Vancouver Foundation and Tides Canada. Support has also been gratefully received from the Cortes Island Fire-fighters Association, local community businesses, generous private donors and our many volunteers.
The photos of the existing collection storage area show how overcrowded we have become. Creating new storage space that is properly climate controlled will allow our collections to continue growing and be preserved for future generations.
The Museum will be closed until April 2013 while the construction progresses. The Heritage Garden remains open and visitor information is available under the covered porch. The Museum looks forward to the Grand Opening and the 125th Anniversary of Manson's Landing in the summer of 2013. The Museum can still be contacted by email cimastwincomm.ca or by phone 250-935-6340.
