Manson’s Hall needs the expertise of a licensed structural engineer to provide plans for reinforcing the structure supporting the upstairs room which was occupied by the library. Following the Vancouver Island Regional Library’s decision to abruptly close their branch at the end of April, VIRL hired an engineer to evaluate the loading bearing capacity of the room. His report said the space was not suitable for a library. There was no indication in his report that the existing structure is failing, but some of the support for the upstairs room does not meet building code requirements for public assembly and needs upgrading for the room to be used again.
At the end of June, VIRL exercised its option to terminate their lease in 60 days. They have now withdrawn all their materials and equipment from the hall and Wednesday they removed their truck from the parking lot. Their engineer’s report did not indicate what reinforcing would be necessary so the Southern Cortes Community Association needs a qualified person to assist us so that space can be utilized again. If you are, or know of, a licensed structural engineer who could help us, please contact me at sprungmantwincomm.ca or 250-935-6332. Thanks!
