An Update from the Wildstands Forest Alliance
Dear Cortes Islanders,
As Island Timberlands (I.T.) has clearly expressed their intent to begin road building in September, many members of the community have responded by continuing their efforts to keep industrial logging off of Cortes. Some of these efforts have included:
• On the ground walks with I.T. representatives
• Meetings with Island Timberlands
• Bi-weekly forest walks with visitors & islanders
• Registering the Children’s Forest Trust as a BC non-profit society
• Documentary filmmaking and media outreach
• Artists Journey in the Forest art auction (Salt Spring; fall 2012)
• Biological inventory of Whaletown Commons, "Bioblitz" (August 18/19)
• And the upcoming... F O R E S T F E S T!
In order to accommodate the arrival of supporters in the Fall, Island Stance has begun the construction of a “Forest Camp.” The Forest Camp will facilitate the provision of water, shelter, food, first aid, and waste disposal for off-island people who would like to participate in the efforts to protect these forests. We believe that it is important to maintain good relations with the Cortes community and welcome all islanders to visit or stay at the camp. Island Stance has drafted a “Community Agreements” document which provides basic guidelines about how to best respect life within the camp, and on the island as a whole. We will also have a number of local liaisons who can bring communications to and from the camp as needed.
In order for the camp to continue to take shape, Island Stance could certainly use some more help! So if you were waiting for a moment to get involved that doesn’t involve going to yet another MEETING, this is it! The launch of the Forest Camp will be on AUGUST 24th – 26th at the first ever:
