Cortes Museum
The Cortes Island Museum is sponsoring a trip aboard MISTY ISLES to Cassel Lake and waterfall in Teakerne Arm, Thursday, July 19th, 2012. You will depart from Squirrel Cove at 10:30am and head north through Lewis Channel to Teakerne Arm. You will pass by the spot where Captain George Vancouver anchored his ship DISCOVERY near the entrance to Teakerne Arm in 1792. The waterfall was called Captain Vancouver’s “spa”. After viewing the waterfall MISTY ISLES will anchor off and participants will take a short hike to the lake. The trail is good but a little steep at the beginning. Along the way there are some interesting artifacts from the logging days. The rocks slope steeply into the lake and if you’ve brought a bathing suit you can take a swim in this picturesque lake on West Redonda Island.

Your naturalist guide, skipper Mike Moore, will share a wealth of information about the birds, plants, animals, and marine life that inhabit the area. Up and down Lewis Channel there is good potential for sailing and there may even be time to poke into the inner bay of Squirrel Cove before returning to the dock at around 5pm for the ferry shuttle.

The cost for the trip is $115 (HST incl.). This year a seasonal green salad and a slice of vegetarian pizza will be offered for an additional $9 (HST incl.) or you may choose to bring your own lunch. Participants from off island should catch the 8:30am ferry from Campbell River to Quadra Island which connects to the 9:05am ferry from Heriot Bay to Cortes Island where you can walk on. When you arrive in Whaletown a shuttle service is provided to Squirrel Cove. The shuttle will return participants to Whaletown to catch the 5:50pm ferry off Cortes Island that evening. Make sure to dress for the weather, including sunscreen and hat, and don’t forget your binoculars and camera.
