Cortes Island Museum & Archive
MISTY ISLES has added a NEW TRIP THIS YEAR to its day cruises sponsored by the Cortes Museum. The extensive reef structure between Hernando and Savary Islands has a myriad of life to explore on the very low one-foot tide on Wednesday, July 4th, 2012. This investigative exploration of a unique rocky formation will be led by biologist/naturalist Sabina Leader-Mense. Participants could see a phenomenal variety of life from clams, shrimp and worms that burrow, to tiny sand hoppers and everything in between all the way up to harbour seals and California sea lions. Every colour of seaweed (algae) thrives here, along with sponges, corals, sea anemones, hydroids, worms, chitons, bivalves, snails, shrimps, crabs, sea stars, sea urchins and bryozoans. You might be lucky enough to watch a wandering garter snake fishing on the low tide. Skipper/naturalist/diver Mike Moore (also known as ‘Diver Mike’!) will be wearing snorkel gear to bring sub-tidal creatures from a little deeper up for participants to touch and experience. He might find a dancing nudibranch or even an octopus!
The walk will be over a slippery cobble beach and participants need to be sure-footed. Rubber boots are a must to protect your feet from sharp-edged shellfish.
Cruise participants from off island should travel on the 8:30 am ferry from Campbell River to Quadra Island to link with the 9:05 am ferry from Heriot Bay to Cortes Island in time for a 10:30 am departure from Cortes Bay to catch the one foot low tide off Hernando Island. On Cortes free shuttle service is available both ways between the ferry and Cortes Bay, so leave your vehicle in Heriot Bay. The fee for this amazing day trip is $115 (tax included). Make sure to bring binoculars, rubber boots and dress for the weather, including hat, sunscreen and a windbreaker jacket. This year a seasonal green salad and a slice of vegetarian pizza will be offered for an additional $9 (HST incl.), or you can bring your own lunch if you prefer. Tea and cookies will be served aboard Misty Isles morning and afternoon. For more information on this and other Cortes Museum sponsored cruises call 250-935-6340 or e-mail: cimastwincomm.ca
